From Factories To Apartments

In a conversation about the evnvironmental history with Roland, we uncovered a fascinating chapter of Needham’s industrial past that many newer residents might drive by every day without realizing. Roland took us back to the era of the Tillotson Rubber Company, a local manufacturing powerhouse that established its roots in town back in 1935.

For decades, the factory was a staple of the local economy and a landmark of the neighborhood’s skyline. Roland described the atmosphere of that era and the significant shift that occurred in 1971 when the machinery finally went silent. The factory didn’t just close; it was completely demolished to make way for a new kind of development. Today, the site serves a completely different purpose, with apartment complexes standing exactly where the rubber plant once churned, marking a permanent transition from Needham’s industrial identity to its residential future.
